Counselling

Our counsellors provide the opportunity for you to talk freely about your situation, and any issues around abuse that are currently troubling you or which you may have been dealing with for some time. They will help you work through any confusion without judgement; they will not advise you but help you to find your own way forward.

Our trained counsellors give their time free of charge; however, we do ask for a small, affordable contribution to help run this service. Counselling sessions are typically an hour long and held every week, at the same time and on the same day. Unfortunately, we do not have creche facilities at the centre.

How we help

Domestic abuse has both a devastating and radiating impact. Our team take a non-judgemental and respectful approach to their work and we do all that we can to ensure that everyone who needs our services can use them, how they want to, when they want to, and where they want to. Domestic abuse does not discriminate and happens in every community. We are proud to work inclusively with anyone who has experienced abuse and our services are designed to reach everyone impacted by abuse.

The support that we offer is holistic, trauma informed and individually tailored to each person as we know that although there are common behavioural patterns, not one experience is the same as any other  and there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution.

Our highly qualified team are there to empower those affected by domestic abuse, giving them the knowledge and confidence to choose the steps on their journey to recovery.

Coffee mornings

Come and join us at our centre on Fairfield Road when we hold our regular coffee mornings. You’ll be in good company and you can join in as much or as little as you like. If you just need a couple of hours to safely gather your thoughts, with a warm drink and a few biscuits, that’s fine. It helps to be around others who have been/are in similar situations – who better to understand what you’re experiencing/have experienced? You’re never alone.

Our coffee mornings are held Friday mornings from 10:30 till 11:30.

Refer to TEF

We welcome third-party referrals from professionals. We’re trained to help anyone who has been affected by domestic abuse and treat every referral individually, according to their needs.

We have plenty of helpful information that we can forward to your organisation, e.g. advice on how to identify and approach someone struggling with abuse, and how to refer them to The Elm Foundation. We can also carry out training at your workplace for staff members, should this be required.

Therapies

art therapy / reiki and reflexology / Indian head massage / mindfulness

We offer a number of different therapies that can show you how to express your feelings and organise your thoughts, and – with such as Indian head massage, reiki and reflexology – help you to feel more relaxed and calmer.

We also offer art therapy and mindfulness sessions. Feedback from such sessions include: “Art therapy has helped me realise that I’m not on my own.”; “It gives me peace.”; “We all have different views and opinions but I feel able to speak up in the group.”

Our programme of therapies is subject to change; get in touch with us for details of the current therapies we’re running.

CAB and Legal surgeries

A common aspect of domestic abuse is the removal of choices. It’s difficult to leave an abusive situation if you believe you have nowhere to go, you’d have no money for food, no support network to lean on and no prospects for the immediate future.

Our regular surgeries will help you to understand your rights and what help and support you could be eligible for, as well as any legalities associated with your situation, e.g. access to children, divorce and the legal division of joint assets, etc. Advice is completely free and given by professionals in their respective field.

It’s incredibly empowering to understand what your options are in any situation, particularly if you’re someone who’s at risk of being coerced or controlled. Contact us for more details concerning when the next surgeries will be held.
