Survivor Stories: From Survivor To Founder

The Story Behind Coffee, Cake, Create

Hi I’m Laura, I’m the Founder of Coffee, Cake, Create — a gentle, welcoming, art-therapy–inspired group created for people living with PTSD and those recovering from domestic abuse.

I am a survivor of domestic and sexual violence. In early 2025, I left an abusive relationship where I experienced significant isolation and control. I was not allowed to work or go out independently, and over time I lost my sense of identity and independence. Much of my energy was spent trying to keep my abuser happy, and I felt as though my voice and autonomy had been taken away.

Finding a Way to Cope

After leaving the relationship, I began receiving support while also navigating police investigations. During this time, I turned to colouring as a simple way to distract my mind and manage overwhelming thoughts. I found the process incredibly calming and grounding.

The Idea for Coffee, Cake, Create

It was through this experience that I began to wonder whether something so simple could help others who might be going through similar situations. Inspired by that idea, I continued my training, developed my concept, and in January 2026 Coffee, Cake, Create was born.

Creating a Safe Space

The group aims to provide a safe, relaxed space where people can come together, be creative, and connect with others without pressure or expectation. No one deserves abuse, and no one should have to feel alone in their recovery.

My sessions are open to survivors of domestic abuse as well as individuals living with mental health challenges. Find out more by finding Laura on Facebook:
