From Couch to 5K to Ramathon Success

4 min read

You started your story on Just Giving with ‘Deep breath. Here goes’ and you did it! Congratulations Hollie from all of us at The Elm Foundation.

This is Hollie’s story…

A year ago, Hollie would never have called herself a runner. Now, the outreach education worker and mum of two completed her first half marathon, completely smashed her fundraising target for The Elm Foundation and inspired her daughters along the way.

Running for a Reason

Hollie took on the Ramathon to challenge herself and show daughters Elsie and Orla that they can do hard things. Supporting people affected by domestic abuse also gave every mile extra meaning, with funds raised helping transform refuge gardens into safe, welcoming spaces for families rebuilding their lives.

Supported By Friends

Hollie only started running last October through Couch to 5K. After a chat with fellow school mums and, as she puts it, a few too many drinks, she signed up for a 10K on Mother’s Day. Crossing that finish line gave her the confidence to enter the Ramathon the very same day.

Training Around Real Life

Training was not easy. As a single mum balancing work, family life and a house move, there were weeks when running was impossible. She grabbed every opportunity she could, even buying a running buggy so her daughters could join some of the journey. Despite moments of self-doubt, a tough 16K run the week before race day convinced her she was ready.

An Emotional Finish Line

On race day, family and friends lined the route with homemade signs while loved ones sent encouraging voice messages. Crossing the finish line was unforgettable, but the best moment came later at home when her girls cuddled her and told her how proud they were. Elsie wanted to show off Mum’s medal at school, while Orla ran around the house declaring, “I’m like Mummy!”.

More Than a Medal

Hollie exceeded her fundraising target and said the experience taught her just how resilient she really is. Her message to anyone thinking about taking on a challenge is simple: “Do it! Or let me know and we can do it together!”

Looking back, Hollie sums it up perfectly: “A year ago I couldn’t run and now I’ve completed my first half marathon, raised money for an incredible local charity and discovered just how much can change when you believe in yourself.”

We all think you are amazing Hollie – thank you so much for running every mile for us, you are an inspiration to your daughters – we are forever grateful!
