Sadly Sue Fiennes died suddenly on New Year’s Day. Her loss is felt deeply by her close family, friends and colleagues.
Sue asked for donations in her memory to be made to The Elm Foundation and she also very kindly left £5,000 to The Elm Foundation in her will. We are so grateful to Sue and to everyone who has donated in remembrance of her.

About Sue
Sue Fiennes grew up in the mill town of Belper. She became head girl at the local grammar school and was always a high academic achiever. She went on to a career in social work, always a safe pair of hands.
That career included strategic leadership roles in Sheffield, Surrey and as Director in Herefordshire from 2002. Sue was an early champion of ‘no secrets’ and ‘protecting vulnerable adults’ from before its final publication in 2000.
In retirement Sue led adult and children’s statutory safeguarding boards in Sheffield, prompting The Star to report that Sue is back in town.
Sue continued supporting the vulnerable and had a particular interest in The Elm Foundation of which her sister Fay Atkinson was a founder member in 1985 and she requested that any donations in her memory were to benefit clients who had experienced domestic abuse.
As a long-time resident of the village of Cressbrook in her much-loved Peak District with her husband Peter Fairbrother, she was a committed community member always ready to listen and respond.
A celebration of Sue’s life and how much she gave to the village will be held there when lockdown is lifted. There is much to celebrate.
How your donations support us
The Elm Foundation have received £985 in donations in memory of Sue. Thank you so much to everyone who remembered Sue in this way.
Donations in memory are usually used where there is most need, or where the person had particular connection to an area of our work.
After talking with Sue’s family, the donations made in memory of Sue will be used to create ‘Sue’s Corner’ in each of the playrooms in our refuges. These corners will be equipped with sensory toys for children in our refuges to play with and learn from, and to assist with any therapy work we do with them.
